GROUP'S NEWS

The group finished the year with two garden visits – very different gardens but with some similarities

Meg’s garden covered a smaller area but was filled to capacity.  After Scruff inspected us, we were able to wander round  a garden where splashes of colour complemented the green shrubs.  Camellias that were just coming into flower, geraniums appeared unexpectedly and colourful  gazanias added to the picture. We lost count of the number of different Chinese lanterns.

On first sight I thought the back garden where the curved lawn was backed with a variety of shrubs and trees would be my favourite part of the garden, but the vegetable garden was unbelievable- I’m not sure how Meg is going to use all the vegies as they all seem to be thriving.

We took home lots of cuttings and the memory, not just of a lovely garden, but of lovely slices as well.  Thanks Meg.

Minke’s garden was the largest we have visited this year.  We plan to go again in a different season and when the weather is a little pleasanter.

Again all the plants were thriving.  The clematis were spectacular and there were lots of roses, irises and camellias.

The winding paths led to many unexpected treasures but the memorable thing was the recurring toadstool  theme.  These ornaments were all shapes and sizes and although Minke says she just buys them on impulse they all seemed designed specially to fit into  the garden.

Our first meeting for 2012 will be in our new home on Friday, March 2nd at 1:30 pm.  Everyone is welcome. Finally, a thought for the summer season as we try to keep our gardens under control:

"The best way to garden is to put on a wide-brimmed straw hat and some old clothes.  And with a hoe in one hand and a cold drink in the other, tell somebody else where to dig."
