A very warm welcome to Latrobe Valley U3A's Web Site. U3A is an acronym for The University of the Third Age. Although not strictly a University in the accepted sense, we are part of an educational organization which extends to almost every country in the world. It is a Non-political, Non-religious institution, designed to provide low cost educational opportunities for retired people in a relaxed and informal environment. Its main purpose is to promote self-help education and practice lifelong learning. No prior educational qualifications are required – no degrees are awarded The 'Third Age' in the title refers to a phase of life. After the first age of dependent childhood and Education comes the second age of independent adulthood in work and home-making, followed by the third age - the age of active retirement All tutors and other leaders are volunteers and are generally drawn from the membership.
